First Announcement

  About the workshop 
  Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS), would like to host the first international workshop on “Tethys Dynamics” in Beijing.  
  The Tethyan realm is the largest and youngest continental collisional collage, which spreads more than 15 000 km along strike from Western Europe to Papua New Guinea. It was built by the collision between the Eurasian continent and fragments of Gondwana continent including African, Arabian, Indian and Australian plates. The Tethyan realm not only differs greatly from place to place, but also shares a number of common processes of mountain building, making it an all-inclusive natural example. As the most populated and earliest civilized area, the Tethyan realm has a very long research history. Extensive studies have been conducted in the past several decades on the nature, history, kinematics and dynamics of the Tethyan realm, which greatly improved our understanding of life cycle of mountain belts, as well as interactions between lithosphere (rigid plate), hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere. 
  The objectives of the workshop are to review the current studies on the geodynamic evolution of the Tethyan realm, from Alps in the west, through Himalaya in the center, to Australia in the east. The state-of-the-art scientific issues with the Tethys tectonics will be presented from the point of view of geology, geophysics, geochemistry and geodynamics. Potential topics of the workshop include: 
  1. Deep structure of present-day Tethyan realm, with a focus on differences between old orogen, young orogen, and active subduction zones, as well as on their linkage between each other
  2. Evolution of the Tethys Ocean, from opening to closure, with a focus on constraining key stages of how the Tethys realm was built. 
  3. Dynamics of the Tethys realm, with a focus on key parameters controlling subduction initiation, oceanic subduction, and continent-continent collision.   
  The workshop will include two-day open discussion with a few keynote talks. At the workshop experts will share their latest findings and views. The Organizing Committee of the workshop intends to bring together geologists, geophysicists and geochemists with comprehensive exchange of views, which provides advantages of guiding our future work on the ongoing observations in the Tethyan realm. 
  The workshop is mainly launched by State Key Laboratory of Lithospheric Evolution, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is heading a series of projects on orogeny systems in the recent years.

  Preliminary Schedule 
  The workshop will be divided into two sections. Section 1 will focus on observations. Section 2 will focus on evolution of Tethyan realm. Each speaker will have 30+15 min for talk and questions. 

  Registration 
  NO registration fee will be charged, but registration is required. Registration will be done on 7 Oct, 2018 at IGGCAS.

  Conference Venue 
  The workshop will be held in the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS. Sessions will take place in a meeting room equipped with video projectors that can link to PC. 

  How to Arrive 
  IGGCAS is around 27 km away from Beijing International Airport (Fig. 1). The best way to arrive at IGGCAS from the airport is to take a taxi. It costs usually ~110 CNY from terminal T3 to IGGCAS. If you take metro, the nearest station is Jiandemen of line 10 (Fig. 2). Recommended accommodation will be Beijing Grand Hotel, which is 15 min by walking from IGGCAS.

  About Beijing 
  Beijing, the capital city of China, is an ancient city with a long history of 3000 years. The long history leaves Beijing lots of precious cultural treasures, including the Great Wall, Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, etc. that have already been well-known to the world.
